Finally, after almost a month of looking for a company where we could apply for OJT, I was hired. I started my training last Tuesday. Well, nothing really happened on the first 2 days of my training. I was sitting all day long. But on the third day everything went different, one of the trainer assigned a job for me, testing software. He briefed me and gives some background on the platform that we’ll use.

Anyway, remember my last entry about the reboot? Well, I haven’t finished it yet and don’t know when it’ll be finished because of my training. So I’ve decided to download a wordpress theme, a nice and neat theme that I could use. I found MW wordpress theme from themes.wordpress.net and immediately downloaded it.

I liked this theme because of its ads placement. You can easily paste the ad code. The theme is neat and simple. It has several colors to choose from. I just loved the way it was designed. Ads were a little disordered on IE, though.

I still don’t have company for my OJT and I hate it. And instead of wasting my time doing nothing I’ve decided to create a new theme for this blog which will also use for the other blog.

I am on the design phase. Did some googling on combining colors and everything that would help. Downloaded CSS book and visited CSS galleries to get some inspirations.

I don’t know when It’ll be online but with so much spare time that I have, maybe soon.

Wordpress 2 has this uber cool feature called Import; it helps us import posts and comments from another system to wordpress. You can choose a system to import from blogger, textpatter, RSS and Movable type.

I haven’t really tried using this feature but CJ have used it successfully. She transferred all her posts and comments from her blogger account to wordpress. I was so happy that it worked well.

Kudos to Wordpress team for creating such a great feature.

Why use Gravatars?

I’ve been blogging for almost a year and most blogsites that I often visit have these. I thought of making an entry on why bloggers should use gravatars in their blogs.

What is a gravatar?

According to Wordpress Codex:

Gravatars are Globally Recognized Avatars. An avatar or gravatar is an icon, or representation, of a user in a shared virtual reality, such as a forum, chat, website, or any other form of online community in which the user(s) wish to have something to distinguish themselves from other users. Created by Tom Werner, gravatars make it possible for a person to have one avatar across the entire web. Avatars are usually an 80px by 80px image that the user will create themselves.

A Gravatar is essentially the same thing, but they are all hosted on a single server and are called up by encrypting the users’ email address via the MD5 algorithm. So instead of having one avatar on one forum you visit, and another at a blog you visit, you could have the same avatar at both.

Why use Gravatars?

You can visit gravatar.com for more info. And you can download the gravatar-sign up plugin here, it allows commenters to sign up gor gravatar by checking the checkbox and filling in the desired password.

How To: Transfer files using WS_FTP

I’ve been using [tag]ws_ftp[/tag] since high school to upload files for my webpage. Yeah, I still use the same software and I really am into it haha. I am using WS_FTP LE(limited edition) it’s for free but I don’t know if they still have that edition.

What is WS_FTP?
WS_FTP is a software which lets you transfer files from your computer to the remote host/server.

What is [tag]FTP[/tag]?
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, it is the language for file transfer from computer to computer across WWW.

How to [tag]Upload[/tag] files using WS_FTP?

Local system ws_ftp
Local System

remote site ws_ftp
Remote Site

The local system is where you can view files stored on your computer. Remote Site allows you to view files stored on the server/ remote site.

What is the difference between upload and download?
Upload is when you transfer a file from your pc to remote site while download is when you get a file from the remote site to your pc.

Before we start make sure you have the software(ws_ftp LE). If you don’t have a copy, you can email me or just leave a comment and I’ll send to you the copy.

We have to set up the session properties so we could connect to the remote site.

session properties
Session Properties

Profile name: You can put name that you want. Mine is jong.

Host Name/ Address:
here you will place the host name or the address of the ftp of that website. Mostly they use this format ftp.hostname.com

Host Type: just set it to Automatic detect.

User id: make sure you add @hostname.com to your user id because it won’t work if it’s missing. Uncheck Anonymous.

Password:
your password here.

Click apply then connect. If you can’t connect, maybe you don’t have an account or something. It’s not my problem anymore. hehe

Ok Now this is where you’ll actually learn how to transfer files. haha…

Select the directory where you saved your file or something. Locate the file yourself then click that button with an arrow pointing to remote site(that button in between the local and remote site).

If you want to download from a remote site, do the same thing. Find the file or folder you wish to download then select it and click the button with an arrow pointing to local system.

Now I know how to transfer files hehe. The next question is how do I upload [tag]wordpress[/tag] themes?

Once you’ve created or downloaded a wordpress theme, you can upload it to the remote site using any FTP software, Here we are using ws_ftp. Select that folder(i.e., wordpresstheme) from your local system, then go to remote site side and go to wp-content/themes. Once you’re there, you can now click the button. haha

I hope you enjoy my soo Noob tutorial haha… I know am not really good but hey at least I have the guts. haha
